Description
The central figure in this photograph is a gazebo, photographed at night, under partly cloudy skies. A boardwalk leads to the structure; its railing of which can be seen entering from the bottom of the photo. It slides out of the frame at a diagonal, then enters again at a different angle. As it nears the gazebo, the railing catches some of the light that glows under the roof. The raw unpainted wood of the railing contrasts with the painted structure, with its red tin roof. Landscape lights bathe the understructure in blue light; the rest falls into shadows.
This structure is manmade; but as the viewer follows its lines across the bottom, zigzagging through the angles of the boardwalk, into the gazebo and up to its pointed roof, he will notice a remarkable sky. Clouds seem to radiate from the cone of the roof. They glow at the center of the picture, fading to blackness at the edges of the frame. In that near-darkness is one bright point of light -- Venus is in the western sky.
