Description
In the middle of the water, on the edge of the horizon, the Morris Lighthouse stands as a sentinel in the waters off the coast of Charleston, SC.
The foreground of the image shows grass-covered dunes and a line of sharp-edged boulders reaching out into the sea. Atop the dune is a single wooden post, imitating the stance of the distant light. The sea grass that holds the dune in place tangles itself around the piling. A small, thin beach can been seen, with small waves washing across it.
Between the dune and the rocky jetty, in the far distance, is the light itself. Its tall, sturdy tower has two thin windows placed vertically in its side. The slim obelisk is tall and straight, still worthy, although it shows its age. The paint of its red and white stripes is faded and chipped; the original red brick color shows through, giving an effect of rust and peach. The lantern above the striped tower is painted black, to be seen against the broad sky.
Above it all, a layer of clouds moves in from the horizon, thickening, suggesting the possibility of a storm. The clouds, although mostly white, have the heavy gray shadows that portend rain. The bit of sky that isn't yet covered remains a brilliant blue.
The red and white light has no land around it, that island having been eroded away by years of rough sea. Yet it remains, proud and tall, in a gray sea.
