Description
Shown from below down river, with rocks in the foreground, Watson Mill Bridge stretches horizontally across the frame. The bridge is made of lumber; its vertical planks, at one time painted red, have now weathered to an uneven tan/gray in most places, with only remnants of the color remaining. Halfway along the long structure is a wide stretch of open window, which allows light inside.
The long bridge spans spillway on a low wide river, which seeks its way around large rock formations. In this photo, the water level is low. Water stills falls from the spillway; but it isn't gushing. The river, which in wet weather covers the great rocks, tumbling and churning, has left its mark, as can be seen by the dried mud along the edges of the rocks. But in this image, the rocks are mostly dry, with foot-high grass growing in shallow holes where dirt has settled.
The image can be divided into three horizontal portions. The huge boulders in the foreground take up the bottom half of the frame; the blue expanse of sky covers the top; and the bridge itself is in the center, with pines and oaks filling in around the edges.
Watson Mill Bridge is the oldest covered bridge in Georgia that is still in use on its original site. It is in northern GA, near Athens.
