Artist's Description

In this beautiful nature portrait, a chocolate brown and golden orange butterfly rests on the frond of a fern. The solid green of the frond behind the browns and yellows of the butterfly make an excellent contrast. The soft background, also green, blends with the frond for effect; but the frond is shown in sharp focus. And the symmetry of the butterfly's form contrasts nicely with the triangle shape of the fern. The butterfly was most obliging to stay while I took the shot.

The Blue Ridge Parkway, in NC, is full of nature and scenic views.

I've always loved looking at nature, drifting along with the ever-changing clouds, stopping to smell the roses. God's creation gives an abundant and ever changing variety of subjects for me to capture. I enjoy photographing all of nature, from the wide vistas of mountains and valleys, right down to spiders, butterflies, and dewdrops. I bought my first camera, a Canon AE-1, in 1979, and practiced and experimented and asked questions. I still ask questions and read blogs; but I've never taken a formal course or workshop. I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro.
