Description
The width of Butler Creek is shown, with its clear reddish water, as it flows through Phinizy Swamp. Like a typical Southern water scene, the Spanish moss drips heavily from the limbs of the trees, dragged down by its own fullness, almost touching the surface of the water.
The water itself is clear. But the bed of the creek is a mud-colored reddish brown, due to the iron ore present in the area. The shadows under the trees are dark; but the sunlight that hits the scene reflected off the water, creating an inverted universe.
The trees on the left side of the scene are thicker, and stretch their branches over the water, encroaching on the image. Against a background of Spanish moss, the red buds are just popping open. This side of the creek has been let untouched by man. The right bank has been thinned -- the undergrowth cut back -- to make a nature trail just behind the closest trees. Otherwise, the scene is of man's molestation.
Butler Creek flows in a straight path between these two rows of trees, curving just a bit in the distance. A slight shimmer on the surface speaks of gentle movement along its path; but the surface remains calm enough to cause a clear reflection of what is above.
Butler Creek flows through Phinizy Swamp, a nature preserve close to Augusta, GA.
