Description
The swirling abstractness of algae growing on the surface of a pond looks like a photo of Earth from outer space. Lakes, islands, inlets, and gulfs seem to be carved out of the vibrant green land masses. The topography is indicated by the varying shades of green and the blotches of larger bits of detritus.
In truth, this is a photo of algae growing on a pond. As it varies in thickness, so it varies in color. It grows around patches of weeds and grass clippings, which have died and turned brown. Motion on the water's surface causes motion in the scum, and it changes shape throughout the day, pushing, pulling, breaking, and coming together. It shape-shifts, morphing as it moves. Around the main mass, small tendrils of bright green gather and break away.
All of the movement occurs against a flat black background of dingy lake water. A thin layer of massless algae negates all reflections. The lines that show in the blackness are actually thin strings of scum on the surface and roots of long-established grass below.
