Orange butterfly and blossom share the scene, against a softly focused background of green Lantana leaves. The flower shrubs move diagonally away, into the background. In the bottom right corner, mottled soil can be seen at the edge of the plants. The foreground has leaves that are in focus, allowing the viewer to see their veins and toothed edges. The Gulf Fritillary butterfly, orange with black stripes -- even an orange body -- takes the center, its wide wings spread to their fullest. Beside it, in the upper left of the image, spreads the orange, pink, and yellow cluster of a Lantana, offsetting the bare ground opposite, and balancing the colors of the butterfly.
I've always loved looking at nature, drifting along with the ever-changing clouds, stopping to smell the roses. God's creation gives an abundant and ever changing variety of subjects for me to capture. I enjoy photographing all of nature, from the wide vistas of mountains and valleys, right down to spiders, butterflies, and dewdrops. I bought my first camera, a Canon AE-1, in 1979, and practiced and experimented and asked questions. I still ask questions and read blogs; but I've never taken a formal course or workshop. I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro.
