Artist's Description

In this garden scene, filled with green leafy plants, are two splashes of color: a black Swallowtail butterfly sipping nectar from an orange lantana bush. The yellow spots on the butterfly's wings are copied on the yellow-green stems of the plant. The darker shades of green on the leaves are shaded in the muted background colors.

I caught this Black Swallowtail butterfly at Brookgreen Gardens, near Myrtle Beach, SC, as it inspected this lantana. The clear focus and bright colors of the flower and butterfly against the mottled green background make this an exceptional photograph.

Brookgreen Gardens is located on the property of three former rice plantations in the Low Country of South Carolina. Visitors can view and extensive sculpture garden, learn about plantation life and the production of rice, and enjoy nature on the grounds.

About Kay Lovingood

Kay Lovingood

I've always loved looking at nature, drifting along with the ever-changing clouds, stopping to smell the roses. God's creation gives an abundant and ever changing variety of subjects for me to capture. I enjoy photographing all of nature, from the wide vistas of mountains and valleys, right down to spiders, butterflies, and dewdrops. I bought my first camera, a Canon AE-1, in 1979, and practiced and experimented and asked questions. I still ask questions and read blogs; but I've never taken a formal course or workshop. I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro. Although I'm digital, I don't use...
