Description
Small boats and yachts rest for the night in a coastal harbor, bathed in the blue of a clear nighttime sky. The only visible lights are those that dot the boardwalk on the shore's edge. The yellowish lights add definition to the geometric pattern formed by the walkway's rail and throw long shimmers of reflected light across the water.
There are many trees in the scene, their jagged tops in the background, silhouetted against a cerulean sky; but one stands out from among them. The big oak near the water, with tangles of Spanish moss hanging from its twisted branches, has an unseen light focused on its trunk. Thus, trunk, branches, limbs, and leaves are bathed with light.
The top of the image is a stripe of clear blue sky, with silhouetted trees below. The center is the rectangular shapes the form the boardwalk, with its yellow-toned lighting. The bottom of the image -- the foreground of the scene -- is the darkness of the water. These horizontal stripes in various tones of darkness, allow the light of the tree and the lighter shades of the boats to come to the fore.
