Description
With the camera pointed straight down, the dock appears vertical, like a fence; but it's really horizontal, flat to walk on. This boardwalk is a pattern of wooden 2x4s, wood laid beside wood, each piece parallel to the one beside it, and nailed in place. Along the edge, running horizontally across the center of the image, the frame is two boards thick, dividing the walkway from the murky green water of a tidal creek. The frame is covered with a strip of canvas, nailed into place with tacks.
On the boardwalk, at the center bottom of the photograph, is a metal cleat with an S-curve. A white nylon rope is tied around it in a cleat hitch, looping over and under its arms before reaching over the edge toward the water. At the end, a large red rubber ball dangles just above the surface of the water. Its purpose is to protect boats from damage as they approach the dock.
The image is a study in contrasts: the rigid wood in the bottom half, both parallel and perpendicular, playing against the fluidity of the water; the dark green of the water against the lighter brown of the dock. With those areas of background, the cleat and the ball take center stage, both forming curves. And the bright red of the bumper ball gives just the right dash of color.
