Description
The subject of this photo is an S-shaped metal cleat used for typing up boats. The cleat almost fills the frame. Behind it, the top half of the background is dark water, which glints with early morning sunlight. The bottom half of the frame shows the weathered board of the pier itself, running horizontal and parallel to each other.
The image was taken shortly after sunrise. The low angle of the sun projects a lengthy shadow which runs off the bottom edge of the photo. The sun's angle also deepens the shadows in the grain of the wood, heightening the realization of the wood's age and condition. There are golden highlights glinting on the gentle waves and along the top bar of the cleat.
The cleat is centered in the photo. Its arms stretch toward the side edges of the image in a gentle S-curve. Most of the cleat is shadowed, as the sun is rising behind it; but one can see the heavy gray of the metal, the rust on the bolts which hold it onto the dock. And it is highlighted along its horizontal edges.
