Description
A small feather -- probably from a goose or a duck -- floats gently on the surface of a pond. In its Zen-like existence, it hovers on the surface between lake and clouds in a state of complete relaxation. It accepts its direction from the ripples that splay across the water.
The resting feather interrupts the background pattern of concentric circles on the water. Light and dark, reflection and shadow, circle by circle, ever growing, spreading into and across one another, the pattern continues. Those circles are made by raindrops falling gently onto the watery surface.
The feather is resting in the water, but the water also rests on the feather. A spray of small and smaller raindrops are scattered across the feather's waterproof surface. The drops are bright white, reflecting the clouds high above.
The blunt-tipped feather is dark brown on the tip, but gradually lightens to gray. Finally, the shaft and after-feathers at its base are white. These muted browns and grays are repeated in the colors of the water. Looking past the surface, one can see the brown and tan of the rocks and sand beneath; and reflected from above, the light color of the clouds.
Humans could learn a thing or two from the feather, as it drifts without care, heedless of its surroundings.
