Description
The drama of a well-lit night scene is quite impressive! Here, an old oak tree, with ferns growing along its branches and Spanish moss hanging from its limbs, shows stark against a clear black nighttime sky. The tree looms out of nowhere, spreading its canopy like a ghost rising out of a pumpkin patch. The fingers at the end of each twig hold wisps of Spanish moss, waving them gently at passers-by.
The drama of this scene results from one strategically placed spotlight, not seen in the photograph, yet obvious to the viewer. It washes out the natural color of the tree, yet brings it to the foreground, against a backdrop of velvety black sky. Its brightness is almost like a reverse lightning strike, lighting up the night and spreading across the frame.
