Description
In shades of gray beneath a lightly overcast sky, stands a fortress-like structure at the head of a canal. River stone and hand-made brick form the walls and columns. The shadow of the structure, and the trees behind it, are reflected across the water in the foreground. Lines vertical and horizontal form angles and geometric patterns.
Thus the historic Augusta (GA) Canal stands, old, but still in use. It was built in the early to mid 1800s, along the Savannah River, because that portion of the river was shallow and rocky. This structure shows the oldest section, completed in 1815. There it stands today, aged but undaunted.
