Description
The featured butterfly in this image -- an orange Gulf Fritillary -- has found the perfect spot for a sip of nectar: a flowerbed full of orange daisies.
The bright flowers attract the butterfly; and the similarity of color helps to camouflage the butterfly. In fact, there isn't much variety of color in this photo. It's mostly orange, against the background of green foliage.
The leaves on the backdrop are long and thin, like green swords sticking up at random angles. Against that jumble, the other shapes take definition. The roundness of each blossom is accentuated by the petals jutting out around it like wheel spokes. And the stripes of orange and black, along with the symmetry of its wings, make the butterfly the center of attention.
This photo was taken at Brick Pond Park in downtown North Augusta, SC.
