Description
Pedal Boat #5 floats in the water of a small lake. Other boats -- unseen -- join it, lined up together, side by side. All the boats in the fleet are alike in size, shape, and color, except for the number that has been stenciled onto the paddle cover. All are made of fiberglass painted a medium blue. There are rough black strips along the edges to prevent slipping. The foot wells are lined with black rubber, for the same reason. The pedals themselves are black plastic , attached to a metal crank shaft which stretches from the edge of the boat into the large vertical drum of the paddle cover. A handrail along the side of the seat keeps users safe from falling overboard. Everything is the same, except the number. Only the stenciled number is different.
Pedal boat #5 is different, because of its number; and #5 is the chosen subject for this image. This photograph shows the details of #5, up close. Only the right side of the boat can be seen. The vessel's frame is wet, shining with a layer of water. The vertical surfaces of the blue body have begun to dry. The right pedal has been pushed forward. The pedals are both at a 45 degree angle, ready for their next passenger. The crank shaft is horizontal, parallel to the bottom of the boat.
The number 5 has been stenciled onto he side of the paddle cover, large and white. Just one token of individuality.
