Description
A brown pelican stand in profile, facing away to the left. Its tall neck and long beak fill the frame, mandating the vertical direction of the image. The light ash-brown feathers on its wings give way to darker ones on its chest and belly. It's breeding season, as indicated by the rich dark brown on the back of its neck. The graceful neck changes to white-yellow at the crown of its head and continues down to its eyes.
Those eyes! Small and piercing, and rimmed with bright orange, they stare intently at a distant object. The orange color continues down the length of its beak, ending at the drop of water that hangs off the tip.
Water provides the background of the scene. The nondescript backdrop, calm, murky green, does nothing to detract from the subject. The small waves make muted horizontal stripes, contrasting nicely with the tallness of the bird.
