Description
One lily pad, centered in the frame, floats on the dark waters of a small pond. Its stem can be seen disappearing into the depths of the calm, still water. In the roundness of the leaf, its small mouth-like slit is part of its symmetry. The green, red, gold colors are spotlighted by the sun, giving brightness to the subject that floats on a sea of black. The top edge of the leaf curls just a bit, leaving a small shadow on the edge of the circle.
The other components in the image are minimalist. The top corners of the photo include small bits of green vegetation. Between them stretches one pine needle. And along the bottom edge, one blade of grass enters the picture.
The darkness of the water, rather than reflecting the sunlight, seems to swallow the stems of the plants, like a Black Hole. The long stalks fade into the depths of the pond, leaving the central circular lily pad to float free. It gives itself up to the gentle motion of the water.
