Damselflies have long, thin, graceful bodies with four wings that fold up atop their backs when resting. This one is resting on the tip of a large green canna leaf. It looks as if its hanging on for dear life; but really, that's its standard resting pose.
In this vertical image, the thin insect is on the diagonal, with its head pointing toward the top left corner and its tail near the bottom right of the frame. The canna leaf slides in from the bottom left corner to meet the damselfly.
The background is mostly large blocks of green, with blotches of dark red and darker greens. Against those colors, and the bright yellow-green of the leaf, the light blue of the insect becomes the focal point of the image. Its angled body contrasts with the softer angles of the background. Its blue segments, outlined by thin stripes of black, contrast with the mostly uniform background. And the angle of its pose contrasts -- even intersects -- with the angles of the canna leaves.

I've always loved looking at nature, drifting along with the ever-changing clouds, stopping to smell the roses. God's creation gives an abundant and ever changing variety of subjects for me to capture. I enjoy photographing all of nature, from the wide vistas of mountains and valleys, right down to spiders, butterflies, and dewdrops. I bought my first camera, a Canon AE-1, in 1979, and practiced and experimented and asked questions. I still ask questions and read blogs; but I've never taken a formal course or workshop. I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro.
