Artist's Description

One single flower bud -- a Rhododendron -- swollen with new life, fills the frame. The large pod points upward, as do the sepals that surround its base. As they stretch toward the sun, they continue nature's annual cycle of growth. Around the bud, new leaves jut toward the sky, protecting the new flower; they look like the spikes of a green crown, adorning the regal teardrop-shaped flower bud.

The close-up photograph shows each petal of the coming flower, symmetrically arched in a pattern around the bud itself. Some are green; some have a tan fuzz on the. But all are the same in shape. They will grow together until they burst apart into an open flower blossom -- an explosion of color.

The background is full of the rich green color of the large, mature Rhododendron leaves, which were intentionally kept in soft focus, to allow the subject to stand out from it.

I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro. Although I'm digital, I don't use...
