Artist's Description

In the middle of the water, on the edge of the horizon, the Morris Lighthouse stands as a sentinel in the waters off the coast of Charleston, SC.

The foreground of the image shows grass-covered dunes and a line of sharp-edged boulders reaching out into the sea. Atop the dune is a single wooden post, imitating the stance of the distant light. The sea grass that holds the dune in place tangles itself around the piling. A small, thin beach can been seen, with small waves washing across it.

Between the dune and the rocky jetty, in the far distance, is the light itself. Its tall, sturdy tower has two thin windows placed vertically in its side. The slim obelisk is tall and straight, still worthy, although it shows its age. The paint of its red and white stripes is faded and chipped; the original red brick color shows through, giving an effect of rust and peach. The lantern above the striped tower is painted black, to be seen against the broad sky.

I've always loved looking at nature, drifting along with the ever-changing clouds, stopping to smell the roses. God's creation gives an abundant and ever changing variety of subjects for me to capture. I enjoy photographing all of nature, from the wide vistas of mountains and valleys, right down to spiders, butterflies, and dewdrops. I bought my first camera, a Canon AE-1, in 1979, and practiced and experimented and asked questions. I still ask questions and read blogs; but I've never taken a formal course or workshop. I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro.
