Description
Yellows and greens glow through the darkness of this night shot taken at a marina in the Low Country of South Carolina. The black of night covers both background and fore, leaving only the middle area bathed the quiet warmth of golden landscape lights.
The center of the frame, then, is the focal point of the image. The central character is a gnarled oak tree, standing in the bright light of a spotlight. Its trunk leans toward the water; its branches twist as they reach and stretch; its branches are clothed with cascades of Spanish moss. All of this is topped by its small green leaves.
Beneath the oak are a few small buildings and a boardwalk, all dimly lit by the glow of the landscape lights. The boardwalk's railing moves across the scene with geometric precision, imitated and paralleled by the dock below. The boats tied up for the night are incidental, in the shadows, easily missed; but they, too, add to the pattern.
The entire frame of the photograph is dark, save one corner. The bottom left of the image has an interesting stand of marsh grass encroaching, wanting to be included. Its golds and greens enhance the colors of the scene.
Quiet sky, quiet water, quiet scene. Good night.
