Artist's Description

On a stage made of magnolia leaves, a blue damselfly does a handstand. The small insect balances neatly on six legs, its slender body angled diagonally upward away from the camera. Like the body, its wings angle upward, too, folded together, resting on the damselfly's back. The viewer can see four distinct wings, all folded together. Its black eyes look directly at the camera as it performs. One foot hangs over the edge of the "stage". The joint of thorax and wings is cinched like a waist.

The stage itself is a single magnolia leaf, pointing toward the camera, curing downward at the tip. The green color of its surface is covered with tan velvety fuzz. The edge of the leaf is a lighter, yellowish shade of green.

Behind the subject, other magnolia leaves angle away from the tree, minimizing the color palette of the scene.

About Kay Lovingood

Kay Lovingood

I've always loved looking at nature, drifting along with the ever-changing clouds, stopping to smell the roses. I enjoy photographing all of nature, from the wide vistas of mountains and valleys, right down to spiders, butterflies, and dewdrops. I bought my first camera, a Canon AE-1, in 1979, and practiced and experimented and asked questions. I still ask questions and read blogs; but I've never taken a formal course or workshop. I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro. Although I'm digital, I don't use...
