Artist's Description

Amid a dense green forest, a narrow walking path leads straight ahead into the distance. Ground cover along the edge of the trail is in turn covered by the underbrush of young trees and vines. Towering over all is the canopy of the forest -- mature trees with thick gray trunks and massive rhododendron crowding in. The sun's light filters through, dappling the path and the greenery beside it, leaving dark shadowy stripes here and there.

The denseness of the surroundings creates a feeling of safety and solitude, like a primeval womb, blanking out the sights and sounds of civilization and leaving the hiker to breathe deeply of nature.

The vertical format of the photo imitates the strength of the tree trunks and the direction of the path. The bright green of the young leaves frame the photo and adorn the trail with their great variety.

I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro. Although I'm digital, I don't use...
