Artist's Description

The width of Butler Creek is shown, with its clear reddish water, as it flows through Phinizy Swamp. Like a typical Southern water scene, the Spanish moss drips heavily from the limbs of the trees, dragged down by its own fullness, almost touching the surface of the water.

The water itself is clear. But the bed of the creek is a mud-colored reddish brown, due to the iron ore present in the area. The shadows under the trees are dark; but the sunlight that hits the scene reflected off the water, creating an inverted universe.

The trees on the left side of the scene are thicker, and stretch their branches over the water, encroaching on the image. Against a background of Spanish moss, the red buds are just popping open. This side of the creek has been let untouched by man. The right bank has been thinned -- the undergrowth cut back -- to make a nature trail just behind the closest trees. Otherwise, the scene is of man's molestation.

God's creation gives an abundant and ever changing variety of subjects for me to capture. I enjoy photographing all of nature, from the wide vistas of mountains and valleys, right down to spiders, butterflies, and dewdrops. I bought my first camera, a Canon AE-1, in 1979, and practiced and experimented and asked questions. I still ask questions and read blogs; but I've never taken a formal course or workshop. I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro.
