Artist's Description

The swirling abstractness of algae growing on the surface of a pond looks like a photo of Earth from outer space. Lakes, islands, inlets, and gulfs seem to be carved out of the vibrant green land masses. The topography is indicated by the varying shades of green and the blotches of larger bits of detritus.

In truth, this is a photo of algae growing on a pond. As it varies in thickness, so it varies in color. It grows around patches of weeds and grass clippings, which have died and turned brown. Motion on the water's surface causes motion in the scum, and it changes shape throughout the day, pushing, pulling, breaking, and coming together. It shape-shifts, morphing as it moves. Around the main mass, small tendrils of bright green gather and break away.

All of the movement occurs against a flat black background of dingy lake water. A thin layer of massless algae negates all reflections. The lines that show in the blackness are actually thin strings of scum on the surfa...

I've always loved looking at nature, drifting along with the ever-changing clouds, stopping to smell the roses. God's creation gives an abundant and ever changing variety of subjects for me to capture. I enjoy photographing all of nature, from the wide vistas of mountains and valleys, right down to spiders, butterflies, and dewdrops. I bought my first camera, a Canon AE-1, in 1979, and practiced and experimented and asked questions. I still ask questions and read blogs; but I've never taken a formal course or workshop. I switched to digital in 2000, which allows more experimenting, with instant feedback, so I can correct a shot immediately. My current camera is a Nikon D-90, with a 28-300 and a macro.
