Description
A blue-green damselfly with dark solid wings rests on a horizontal magnolia leaf. While not quite filling the frame, both are well to the front of the background, and are the only items that are in focus.
The magnolia leaf reaches across the bottom of the frame from the left edge before turning downward just past the midline. Its bright green color is dusted with the tan fuzz typical of a magnolia leaf; and its edge and veins are set off with yellow.
The damselfly fills the center of the image, as it balances on its six legs. Its body, long and thin, points toward the upper left corner of the image. Its dark eyes seem to be staring at the camera. Body, thorax, and head are green, with just enough blue to stand out against the trees of the background. The wings are dark blue -- almost black -- with lighter colored veins. The four teardrop-shaped wings are folded together and rest atop the body like a wedge.
The distant forest that forms the background shows mottled green in various shades, with occasional slashes of brown. Several spots are the same shade as the magnolia leaf in the front. One patch of bright yellow-green forms a halo around the tips of the subjects wings. the brightness of the magnolia leaf seems to spotlight the insect.
