Description
With a sea of green behind it, an orange Gulf Fritillary butterfly balances on a pompom of purple flowers. At the height of their beauty, the blooms were long curved shafts of bright purple; but much of that has dried in the late summer and early autumn heat. Only remnants of that rich violet can be seen. And the butterfly has claimed it.
The Fritillary stands in marked contrast to the muted greens and bits of purple, with its, bright orange and black striped wings. The small white spots on the top of the wings carry over larger to the underside.
The subject is framed left and right by remnants of the purple clusters. The top and bottom of the image are slashed horizontally with stems from the bush. Its spent blooms cling to the branches. Only the leaves show life.
